Dog Bite Sleeve And How To Use It

1. FAQ – Bite Sleeve & Training:

The inside is usually made of a plastic cylinder that hinges at the elbow and over which a biting surface with soft leather is attached. The sleeve is covered with a jute sleeve. This is held in place with straps to the shoulder pad (which is usually made of hard plastic).

You can start training your dog for bite work yourself of course, but the genetic factor is very important and should be there when the dog is expected to do this work. Without the right genetic composition you are wasting your time on this training (as an example a shepherd vs. a beagle).

Possibility 1 is: you’re going to gather a lot of information yourself, watch videos and tips on different websites. And train your dog on your own.

Or (and I recommend this if you’re new):
You seek the help of an experienced trainer. When you really know what you’re doing, then you can train your dog yourself or your new puppy.

This can be done as early as 8 weeks, but (and pay attention) this really has to be done in very small steps. From 8 weeks old you can already let your puppy get familiar with a whip and the glove.

For example, you can let your pup run behind the whip (like a cat with and toy on a string) and at a slightly later age you can carefully play a pulling game with the glove.

If you are new to this, it is a good idea to get the help of an experienced trainer.

Bitework teaches dogs patience, impulse control, focus and lets your dog have a good training (heavier than retrieving a Frisbee).

However, bitework training is not something to mess around with. Teaching a dog that it’s OK to bite a person requires serious management of dog training, and daily activities.

1. first of all, it is important to educate yourself. It’s not nothing to train your dog to attack someone. Your dog needs to be well trained and to do that, you need to learn how to train first.
If you are new to this area, we recommend that you seek the advice of a professional trainer.

2. In the questions above we have already indicated that it is very important which breed you are going to train with. This will determine, among other things, how well your dog is going to obey you.
Think about: German Shepherd, Akita, Bullmastiff, Doberman or a Boxer etc. These dog breeds have proven themselves in terms of loyalty, strength and reliability.
It is also important to know what your dog’s characteristics are before you start training. Which qualities can you use and which characteristics should you try to reduce…

4. Get the right safety materials. A bite work sleeve is perfect to start with. In our blog we will tell you which are suitable and how to use them.

5. Train him all the basic commands like sit, come, stop, run, and stand before getting to “attack”.

6. Train regularly and be precise. If you’re going to train a dog for your own safety purposes, it means that you’re completely responsible for what your dog is going to do.

2. Best Dog Bite Sleeve(s)

Before you start training your dog, it is important that you have the necessary safety gear. Not only is a dog bite sleeve going to give you protection, but it is also necessary to familiarize your puppy or young dog with this stuff.

But which ones do you need for the beginning and which ones do you need if you are going to train more?

MelkTemn Professional Dog Bite Training Set

dog bite work beginner set

When you are just starting the training of your puppy or young dog, you need things that are not yet suitable for the “real work”. We will explain in the next heading how this works.

This training set is perfect for puppies and young dogs because:

  • The thickness of the sleeve is minimal, allowing a puppy or young dog to bite properly.
  • The texture and material is specially made to be safe for puppies and young dogs ( because it has a layer made of sponge and the thickness of the jute outer layer).
  • The outer layer can be removed to serve as a biting pillow for your puppy.
  • The whip is made of softer material, so you can let your young dog get used to strokes, without scaring or hurting him.

Viper Multi Level Dog Bite Sleeve

When your dog is ready for the real thing, it is wise to move on to better security for you. This sleeve contains all the features to safely train your dog:

  • Used for multiple levels: Green, Intermediate or Advanced Dogs, so perfect for every stage!
  • This sleeve is made of thicker material and has a ballistic nylon sleeve finish.
  • Besides the sleeve only you can also put a synthetic cover over it for extra protection.

3. Using A Dog Bite Sleeve

After you have prepared yourself (you know what to do and have the right materials in house) it is time to start training. We do this step by step (especially with a puppy). These steps apply to puppies and young dogs.

1. Train your dog the basic commands:

The following commands: Sit, Come, Lie, Stay, Stop, Stand etc. Your dog should know these before learning a command like “attack”.

2. Teach your dog to bite the glove vs “attack”:

Make sure your dog is sitting down and try to challenge him by tapping his head or nose with the glove. Repeat this until your dog bites the sleeve.

Whenever your dog is going to bite the sleeve, say ‘attack’. After a while your dog will attack when you say the command, so be careful 😉

Grain free dog treats

Make sure to repeat step 2 a lot and always praise him when he attacks the sleeve. So try to reward your puppy or young dog a lot, but do this as much as possible by rewarding verbally and not always with treats. Switch this off on a regular basis.

We are a big fan of these treats that are perfect for dog training because of their size (they are small), but they contain a lot of energy and protein. They are grain free which means it contains less filler and more meat. Check it out!

3. Create another target

When your dog really reacts to “attack” it is important that you alternate this with a doll in the shape of a human being. You want to prevent that your dog only sees your arm as a target.

If you can find a doll you can give the command “attack” and point to the doll. Doesn’t your dog understand that right away? Try attaching the sleeve to the doll and then try without it.

4. Repeat, rapeat and repeat

Make sure to repeat all the steps these steps so your dog really knows what everything means. This could take a while, but you’ll get there!

5. Swap the doll for a real person

When your dog is ready (And you can try this carefully at a young age) you can ask someone for help to play as an intruder. This person should wear a dog bite suit and of course a (better) dog bite sleeve.

It’s better if your dog doesn’t know that person yet! This works better when it comes to recognizing ‘strangers’.

Now you can also say other words like “intruder” step by step. Of course it depends on what you want to train your dog for. Is it for your own security in the house? Then try to play a role-playing game (let someone walk into the house, but of course do it really safely).

6. Repeat!!!

Keep repeating until your dog does everything exactly the way you want it to and you’ll have a trained watchdog at your disposal in no time! Congratulations!

Once again we would like to advise you to ask for the help of a professional when you are going to train your very first dog! Of course, it is certainly not without risk.

I hope you have learned something from this information and wish you the best of luck going training with your dog! Please leave a comment if you have any other questions about the sleeves!
